Steve and Marijke Hancock
Steve & Marijke discovered each other 24 years ago in a (then) isolated area of Costa Rica. Marijke was farming cattle and cacao on the Peninsula de Osa. Steve, on a world tour studying sustainable agriculture and survival techniques, was drawn to the Peninsula by the gold-rush in order to replenish his stash.
Marrying three years later, the couple spent the next ten years working their way around the world.
Both Marijke and Steve had been artistically involved for the most of their lives on a hobby level. However, arriving on the Atherton Tablelands in 1995, they became involved with another creative motivated couple in a cultural/gourmet venture-Zelia’s Café. The atmosphere surrounding the staff and clientele, largely comprised of artists, poets, actors, musicians etc., was a natural catalyst for the creativity, which ensued. Soon they were to display their efforts in an exhibition of colourful paintings and sculptures.
The success of this exhibition helped them to purchase a property at Watsonville. For the past ten years they have been planting a sustainable forest/seed bank/botanical garden, which serves as an open-air gallery in which they exhibit their larger sculptures. Other works have been on display at various venues around the Tablelands over the past decade.
Plans for the future include the establishment of an artists’ retreat and the construction of a studio large enough to accommodate massive projects undertaken by numerous artists.
