Most artists will tell you for as long as they can remember they have always been artistic. I can honestly say I used to think I hadnt got an artistic bone in my body. In fact when I had the chance to go back to TAFE as an adult, I could have done Fine Arts but instead I chose Business, majoring in Marketing.
But I had always wanted to learn to draw and I saw an advertisement for eight drawing classes with Helen Joy. Then I went on to life drawing at the Art Barn. And a few months later I wanted to put some colour on the paper. My first painting classes started two years ago with Emma Bryant and it didnt take me long to enthusiastically embrace contemporary & abstract art. I then signed up for ArtEscape in 2006 and 2007 with Australian Artists, Colley Whisson/Lyn Diffenbach and Gary Duncan.
At the present time I have a great mentor in Greg Dwyer who has given me the confidence to express myself on the canvas. He has encouraged me to be passionate about my own art and view of the world and not to judge it against other artists. This has sent me off on a voyage of discovery and experimentation.
I am obviously at the start of my journey and look forward to where that will lead me. My favorite painting is usually the one I am working on and my best painting is always the one being conceived in my head. I always believe I can do better, with new ideas constantly emerging to challenge me.
This exhibition is mainly based on aerial photographs of Australia, taken on my trips to Victoria, South Australian, and around the Cape at Pormpuraaw and Kowanyama. They were taken last year during the drought, showing vast areas of land devastated; river beds, dried up; but somehow beautiful and full of colour.
Having joined the Cairns Art Society I have met some wonderful people and local artists, who have given me much encouragement and support. So this year to give something back to the local art community, I am the coordinator for the 62nd Cairns Art Society Annual Art Exhibition at the Cairns Regional Gallery.
