Robin Johnston born in Christchurch New Zealand and was formally trained as a film animator.
Robin is committed to effects achieved directly on the canvas with colour, texture and a total abstract conception. Bold and alive with light and colour Robin creates canvases which excite and engender a sense of power and vitality.
Shapes, space and movement dominate Robin's painting style and in his latest works he has returned to primary colours. His mixed media canvas and boards involve some unusual techniques, now starting from a base of hessian in place of traditional canvas surfaces. Using divergent textures: latex rubber, bitumen and epoxy products are all familiar to Robin in his pursuit of experimental and exciting finishes.
Robin paints to the innovative sounds of jazz music and his work reflects the spontaneity, colour, spaces and expressive improvisation of this music.
Robin's work is sometimes referred to as "Decorator Art" not surprising as Robin has spent 21 years in his successful commercial painting contracting business in North Queensland.
Now working full time as a contemporary artist in his
Holloways Beach Studio, Cairns. Robin's paintings have been commissioned for clients as far afield as the Gold Coast, Christchurch, Nairobi, Zurich Cambridge and Cyprus.
