Spontaneous Combustion
17 August - 1 SeptemberThere is more than one level of meaning to the theme of the exhibition, Spontaneous Combustion. For one, it’s about the fire inside us bursting to be expressed. Even though a lot of thought and planning has gone into some of the work, much of it is largely spontaneous, whereby a canvas may be attacked by one or both of us without any thought as to what the outcome might be. We’re also hoping that this series of work might help to pluck us out of the doldrums, after a fire that recently devastated our property, by painting it out of our systems. Hence, it’s about rejuvenation – the flight of the phoenix.
Over the past few years we have been co-painting increasingly more in our works, and are currently fine-tuning and combining our techniques:
Steve – fast & loose knifework
Marijke – deliberate, detailed brushwork
The inspiration comes from our immediate environment. It’s about life and love, beauty…emotions.
