Emma Bryant
Always having a penchant for art I attended East Sydney Technical College at the age of 16 to study Dress Design and Dress Making. My first job was making costumes for the Sydney Theatre Company and after spending many hours at a sewing machine I was intrigued and inspired to join the set department. I landed my first Set Painters job with Channel Nine in Sydney (on the sets for the Mike Walsh Show) and then by some miraculous stroke of luck I was employed to paint the sets for the opening of the Sydney Entertainment Centre! I continued with the television network until life moved me interstate I managed to land a job with the Northern Territory Theatre Company.
Wanting to broaden my artistic knowledge I enrolled at LaTrobe University in Bendigo, Victoria and commenced a journey that spanned five years, a son, a move to Perth and back and finally a Degree in Fine Art, majoring in Painting and Drawing. I moved to Cairns in 1996 and have continued to paint and exhibit and even teach others the knowledge I have acquired over the course of the last 28years.
Over the last several years I have had steady commission work and last year I was fortunate enough to work for a very talented cairns Interior Designer called Paulene Benko, painting abstract art for many display homes and private residences around the Cairns Area. One recent commission was for the foyer of the Cairns Harbor Lights Hotel.
During my art classes I have been known to make people venture outside their comfort zones and with this exhibition that is exactly what I have done. This is my very first figurative art exhibition, incorporating my love for colour and sense of humour. I find the “Rubenesque” figure much more attractive that those of the modern day role models and have placed them in some funky surroundings and added a hint of Art Deco lines with a modern day twist.
