Dusty Bob Prickett
Dusty Bob was briefly introduced to art at Elam School of Arts, Auckland, New Zealand as an engineering student and then spent most of his civil engineering career drawing straight lines and pushing water uphill. Upon retiring to Cairns in 1984, Dusty planned on taking up wood sculpture as a hobby but became more interested in sculpting in Chillagoe marble.
There was no professional instruction in Cairns available at the time so he applied his engineering principles to grinding and polishing of the marble. Dusty Bob does not use traditional chisel techniques at all and has found that the chrome plater’s techniques of polishing applicable to marble and that helps to draw out the deep gloss. His figurative and abstract sculptures are representational and have evolved from life’s experiences and the many varied characteristics of Chillagoe marble.
Dusty Bob describes the tactile sensations of sanding and finishing a piece of marble sculpture and being able to touch it every time you pass it as much more satisfying than the transient tactile sensations of youth. That’s what age and marble have done for him!
