Welcome to Gallery 53

The art gallery is located in the central business district of Cairns, Far North Queensland, Australia, gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. gallery 53 represents award winning and emerging Australian artists. The range of artworks are as diverse as the Australian landscape and lifestyle. From contemporary and traditional, to the indigenous art of the Far North region.

gallery 53 is the only privately owned art gallery in Cairns that holds regular exhibitions whilst showcasing artworks of local, interstate and internationally recognised artists. We welcome you to visit the gallery and enjoy the wonderful works on display.

All original works are supplied with a certificate of authenticity and valuation. All prices are in Australian dollars. Packing and shipping service for Flight luggage, interstate and international is available.

This body of work is based on aerial views of the Australia Landscape, from Cairns around the Cape, to New South Wales and South Australia.

The exhibition explores the natural abstract of the land, the winding dry river beds contrasting with the linear imprint of man. The tall Cityscapes against the vast areas of burning reds and browns, bright yellows and warm mauves with the dramatic infusion of light which makes the Australian Landscape so unique and precious.

My art is a combination of Abstract and Realism inspired by my love of bright colours and texture. This is my first solo exhibition having started painting only 2 years ago, I hope this exhibition expresses my optimisms and enthusiasm for life.

This Exhibition is a subject very close to my heart, with the convergence of my artwork and the wonderful poems of Banjo Paterson, I hope to give you an insight into the hardships of the men and their horses in the early pioneering days of Outback Australia.

It is very easy to forget what these men went through when we sit in our complacency sipping wine next to the swimming pool, but if it was not for the courage and tenacity of these early pioneers WE may not be quite so fortunate. As I usually exhibit my sculptures, paintings of Australia is a very new venture for me, and hopefully I have captured the spirit of Banjo Patersons poems.

This has been an exciting challenge to get 20 paintings together for this exhibition, I had no problem with getting inspiration, the empathy and insight that Paterson reveals in his portrayal of these wonderful characters that have become a household name will stay with me forever.

escapes, scapes

Those viewing the eclectic works of Rebecca Pierce on first glance make the undeniable assumption that the artist is attracted by colour and beauty.

Further examination of the palpable, tactile, almost edible pieces does however reveal a more stark and surreal agenda for those looking beyond the obvious. It is actually the uneasy combination between extreme beauty and its darker flip side that has been an inspirational wellspring for the most recent works of Pierce.

The viewer is first tempted by images of stark, clear skies, beautiful in their simplicity and alluring with their bold and vibrant colours. But beyond this perfection lies a myriad of deeper questions about what such splendour is masking? How long will such beauty last? Bringing questions to the viewers mind

• Is life really this clear and bright?

• Where are the life forms hiding ?

• Or perhaps the joy of a new dawn concealing something greater?

The artist conveys this delicious and somewhat uncomfortable sensory result through bold application of paint giving a sense of movement and excitement to the canvas. These paintings exhibit extremes in surface with an atmospheric background upon which rocky outcrops, vast expanses of rough terrain and the odd man made divisions are layered on top .

This layering, fundamental to Pierce’s work, in this instance suggests strongly to the viewer that they need to look deeper than what the first impression may convey.

Marion Nucifora

The terrorist attacks that occurred in the USA on September 11, 2001 not only impacted heavily on America as a whole but sent shock waves around the globe. Because of American cultural and social values these attacks had a devastating effect on its psyche.

The decision made by the Bush administration to invade Afghanistan and Iraq was premature and reactive. As an Australian citizen I have always had concerns about our nation’s involvement in these actions and especially when they lacked approval by the United Nations.

Conditions in both these countries have deteriorated since invasion, especially in Iraq where the situation can only be described as catastrophic.

The level of destruction and loss in the human terms has been high and world peace is under even more pressure. The core theme of my work reflects on the above situation from a personal perspective.

With the revitalized interest in photography largely stemming from the accessibility and affordability of digital cameras, many great images do not make it from the computer to the wall. We sometimes forget the basics of how a great photo can stir emotion, wonder and amazement, especially at a size larger than just our computer screens.

This exhibition is about showcasing the hidden photographic talent that resides here in Far North Queensland, in a professional manner, within a commercial gallery space and also on our popular website.

There is more than one level of meaning to the theme of the exhibition, Spontaneous Combustion. For one, it’s about the fire inside us bursting to be expressed. Even though a lot of thought and planning has gone into some of the work, much of it is largely spontaneous, whereby a canvas may be attacked by one or both of us without any thought as to what the outcome might be. We’re also hoping that this series of work might help to pluck us out of the doldrums, after a fire that recently devastated our property, by painting it out of our systems. Hence, it’s about rejuvenation – the flight of the phoenix.

Over the past few years we have been co-painting increasingly more in our works, and are currently fine-tuning and combining our techniques:

Deb is an artist obsessed and consumed by motion and emotion. Her works are tropically bright portrayals of the things that move her heart, from a sun drenched beach to the tenderness of a moonlit kiss.

Deb paints in a neo-futurist, expressionistic style, where the most important consideration is the emotion experienced first during the creation; and then at the viewing of the artwork. She depicts her subject within the passage of time, creating art that subtly explores the immediate past and the present, while also intimating the future about to manifest itself.

Sculptures created for "Intimate" are fanciful and delightful, delicate ceramic creations hand built with an Italianate feel. Abundantly, seriously, erotic, or cheeky and winsome; they present a surprising and unique view of the human form.

This is an exhibition about abstraction in using colour. Colours I have encountered in my thirty years of living in Cairns. Seeing Colour in Paradise is an understatement because colour actually invades my very soul.

The decision was to paint how beautifully different shades work together. Some will make you feel warm whilst others are cold, even chilling.

There can be loneliness or conversely pure joy. Some of the paintings consist of simply two colours applied at different stages and by introducing white (technically not a colour) we can see and experience different aspects of colour.

Through this body of work I seek to unravel the societal issues that shape, and often confound, the mother/daughter relationship by examining the matrilineal line of my Scottish family.

My Australian childhood was bathed in the warmth of freedom and plenty. I heard the stories of pandemics, war and depression, never really understanding the forces that defined my migrant mother and the generations of women before her.
